Week 2 Thursday 27

Thursday's lecture had some more design examples, showcasing some more influenced precedents.

In class we kept working on some random word and phrase use, to help generate rapid ideas - the same exercise that we began in Monday's class.

Week Two, Monday 24 July

In Monday's lecture, we watched an episode of abstract, showcasing the creative process of Christoph Nieman. I really enjoyed it and was quite inspired by his illustration and visual problem-solving.

In class, we did an exercise where we were shown some different symbols and different combinations and juxtapositions and colour and how each variation gives a different interpretation.

Library

I also went to the library and had a look in a few magazines, and found one called Adbusters, which happened to contain a lot of satirical design focused on American politics. A lot of them seemed to use a comic style as well.

More findings

Here are some other things I found when looking at ihi wehi design precedents over that week:

VCD Precedents collected after Thursday

When trying to find some on-topic design precedents, it was quite hard to find some things that addressed my exact topic. I am not dis-heartened though, because maybe that means there is a need for it to be addressed! Here are some I found anyway:

Week One Thursday 20th July Voice of Change

This weeks lecture took a look at poster design as a voice of change. We looked at many different examples of designs addressing ideology, anti-war, human rights, the environment, and social issues. Something I particularly enjoyed was the use of subversion, especially examples such as 'Celebrate Columbus' by James Victore, and 'hmmm...Bush/Quayle ‘92' by John Gall.

Week One, Monday 17th July The Beginning of Rhetoric and Persuasion

Beginning my research and exploration of concept potential.

Since the first class of Design B, I have an understanding of what makes up the Ihi and the Wehi components of an art piece. The term rhetoric has also been cleared up a lot for me. We began with analysing some imagery through this Ihi Wehi principle. Since the class, I have found some other examples of impactful design/imagery and have analysed them through this same lens as well as commenting on their construction and the use of juxtaposition, pastiche, homage, parody, satire, or subversion. I have also been able to read through Max Rashbrooke's book, 'Inequality Debate: An Introduction', and have found some things which stood out to me and commented on them and where they prompt my exploration of inequality (see workbook). I also started a basic brain storm of areas in New Zealand where I might find inequality, just so that I can try to get as broad of a scope as possible before I start to really narrow in on a specific concept.
