Final posters

I have decided upon my final iterations for my posters and sent them to big picture to get them printed:

Week 6 Monday 21st August

Took my two posters into class and printed them off as tiled A2s to pin up for a critique with the tutors. From the feedback, I was able to resize the body copy text as well as condensing it slightly.

Fay helped me to explore more colour schemes:

Adding body copy to try out some of the iterations

More hands iterations

Week 4 Thursday 17th August

Unfortunately I was unwell, and had to miss this studio, but I got a few classmates to fill me in about what was spoken about in the lecture. I think I will try and get my posters printed by an outside firm, to avoid the huge toystore rush/gamble. I'm thinking I will take them to big picture to get it done. I'm hoping to send them the file on Monday afternoon right after the studio (using that as my last chance consultation before I print) Hopefully this will leave me enough time for them to complete the job, and for me to finish off my workbook ready for thursday! I talked to some 4th year students before the weekend for some critique and then started working on some iterations mostly on my hands poster.

Week 4 Monday the 14th Continued

Talking with both Fay and Caroline after the Interim presentations was good, and advice seemed to more or less line up more than in the past which was good.

The advice was to instead of having so many sets of hands, maybe focus on one set, and make it nice and big Also play around with other colours, Caroline showed me this:

Another Saul Bass work, and suggested I use blue and purple as my colours because not only has he used them but because blue is opposite of orange, and purple is adjacent to that.

I also need to make my body copy way smaller and play around with its positioning more.

Here is what I whipped up in the end of class, as part of my iterative process:

I also might take a look at changing the headline to be more about the limitations of poverty, and also might redesign these hands, and possibly alter the colours a little

Week 4 Monday 14th August

INTERIM PRESENTATION 2

Here are the posters I had for the presentation:

HERE IS MY FEEDBACK SHEET:

Do the visual strategies clearly communicate the aim?

I feel that in the orange poster, you could make the visuals slightly more related to education? The header text could be made in the shape of a graduation cap?

The sub-header is a bit lengthy

If not, why?

Not really getting the helping hand motif, looks like the hands are dragging down rather than helping.
(The hands are meant to be dragging down so at least that is clear, however, I may need to revise my heading still so that this is clear)
Not obvious enough

Is the designer using Pathos, Logos or Ethos?

Logic?
Logos

Are the posters visually engaging?

Yes, body copy on hands needs to move and hands could be arranged to be a little more dynamic.

Yes!

Yes, I like the hands, body copy placement needs work

If so, why?

If not, why?

What is the aim of these posters?

Raise awareness of those who can't afford to achieve their goals? Education? - second one is unclear.

If you come from a low-income household then you lack the access to higher education than others have?

Is the aim easy to identify through text?

Not so much in the hand one - we only find out about education in the body copy

Yes
Yes, text is good
Yes- through text

If so, why?

Good imagery

The hand poster

What is the concept of these posters and is it easy to identify?

Poverty affecting education

Week 3 Thursday 10th August

This class proved to be quite a stressful class, as Fay was wanting to have everybody print out some tiled A2 posters with some typography, and I was still waiting to take a good quality photograph of my Tantalus subversion. Not only this but I was still having to rethink my options for my second poster. Caroline came and talked to me and saw my illustrations of hands and suggested that if I like that kind of thing to find a way to use that. I did get quite stuck as well because the headlines have to be the same for both posters, yet both posters have to be different and use different rhetoric strategies, and so I got quite stuck on that thinking that if I moved forward with an idea for my second poster, I would end up not being able to think of a good headline which can apply and enhance both of them well, and I would have to try a different approach and will have wasted time developing a poster idea I can't use, but then still not being able to come up with a headline which worked for my tantalus poster but also inspired a decent idea for my second poster. This was all quite stressful, when I was being hurried along, but I took a picture of my tantalus subversion with my phone to use for the class, and try to put some typography on it. There wasn't much time left in class, and Caroline had suggested looking into illuminated manuscripts as an idea for how to present my tantalus.

So this is what I had time to whip up in class, keeping in mind that after only a few minutes working on this, the manuscript idea wasn't going to work, especially in a VCD poster sense, and also I don't like this at all but I'm still including it as part of my process.

Week 3 Monday continued

Here are the posters I printed for today's presentation:

The feedback from Caroline and Fay was helpful, they definitely liked the tantalus subversion ones the best especially this one:

Feedback on where to go from here:

- Price tag on the cap could be confusing, maybe remove it
- Crop out the top portion of the art when it doesn't serve a purpose
-Try different ways of subverting the cap (painting/collage etc)
- Look up Gustave Dore
- Try making the graduation cap as if it is the holy grail: light pouring out, sparkling etc
- Could subvert pool to seem more rapid and rushing past, like it could be trying to pull him away even more.
- Think about what/who a modern day tantalus would look like or how this would be represented.. (pop art?)
-Take the green out of the type
